An active bystander is someone who witnesses a potentially harmful situation and takes action to intervene, prevent, or de-escalate it. They might speak up against discrimination, harassment, or violence, provide support to victims or seek help from authorities. Active bystanders play a crucial role in promoting safety and preventing harm in their communities.
Our courses empower participants to become active bystanders. The course covers defining sexual violence, understanding its societal impacts and recognising incidents. Participants will build confidence in safe intervention techniques and learn practical tools to challenge and stand up to sexual violence. Training can be delivered in various formats: face-to-face, online, or self-guided e-learning.
This workshop explores some of the myths and facts around all forms of sexual violence. It is designed to raise awareness of the issues faced by survivors and impacts on society, with a view to improving our ability to intervene and stand-up to sexual violence, abuse and harassment.

Following our Active Bystander course for the University of Essex, 85% of participants pledged to be active bystanders and advocate on behalf of survivors in the future.
“I really enjoyed the session and only have positive comments about the session and the trainer. I’m going to recommend the training to other teams at the university who also handle reports/complaints/disclosures as I truly felt better equipped to support survivors of SV/DA after this session.”
